It’s easy to feel trapped by your 9-to-5; with limited vacation days and never-ending to-do lists, it’s hard to escape a tried and true routine. Regardless of where you’re at in your career, it’s beneficial to make traveling a priority. With a little bit of effort and shift in your perspective, it’s possible to tweak your work schedule and take some time out for yourself.

This is so true, Akosua! My company is based in New York, but has a couple of offices in Europe — so far I’ve gone to the London and Brussels offices. Once for a business trip that I extended and once because I asked to work from that office for a couple of days.

Another tip to consider, depending on how established you are at your job, is to take an annual sabbatical — for instance, a month in addition to your normal vacation that you can take all at once so you really get to enjoy your travels. I’ve seen people do this at my previous company and they always came back refreshed and ready to work. Make yourself indispensable at work and they’ll be more likely to do what they can to keep you there!

I recently entered the corporate world, and thought it would be difficult to get enough time off to explore. These tips were extremely helpful! Thank you.

One of the things I’ve noticed about my friends with corporate jobs who travel the most is that they work at large companies with lots of national and international offices. They are able to work out of a different office and then explore that area in the evenings and on the weekends. If your company allows this, take advantage of it!
